Esther Schipper
Esther Schipper ouvre sa première galerie à Cologne en 1989. Ce qui débuta comme un lieu dédié aux projets d’édition de multiples et d’écrits, se tourna progressivement vers une galerie plus commerciale. Elle fut parmis les toutes premières à présenter des artistes comme Angela Bulloch, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Carsten Höller et Philippe Parreno. Tous sont représentés par Esther Schipper depuis le début de leur carrière.
En 1995, la galerie ouvre un second espace à Berlin avant qu’il ne soit entièrement déplacé deux ans plus tard. Depuis lors, la programmation a été élargie et inclut des artistes comme Thomas Demand, Ceal Floyer et Gabriel Kuri. Depuis 2005, la galerie représente la succession de General Idea. L’origine de leur relation remonte aux tous débuts de la galerie Esther Schipper, lorsque celle-ci ouvre à Cologne avec le collectif canadien. Au fil des ans, la galerie a constitué une somme d’archives des plus complètes.
En janvier 2011, après quinze années passées à Berlin Mitte, la galerie déménage à Schöneberger Ufer 65, un quartier voisin de l’historique Neue Nationalgalerie qui fut le premier centre des galeries à Berlin il y a cent ans. Le nouvel espace d’exposition est installé dans une résidence classique des années 1890, qui fut réhabilité par l’architecte berlinois Arno Brandlhuber, et dont les bureaux ont été dessinés par l’architecte berlinoise Christiane Schmitz.
Esther Schipper opened her first gallery in Cologne in 1989. What started as a project space for publishing multiples and writing, gradually turned into a commercial gallery. She was among the first to show artists like Angela Bulloch, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Carsten Höller and Philippe Parreno. All of them have been represented by Esther Schipper since the beginning of their artistic career.
In 1995 the gallery opened a second space in Berlin before it has been relocated completely two years later. Since then the program has been expanded to include artists such as Thomas Demand, Ceal Floyer, and Gabriel Kuri. Since 2005 the gallery represents the estate of General Idea. The origin of this relationship goes back to the beginnings when Esther Schipper initially opened her gallery in Cologne with the Canadian collective. Over the years the gallery has built up a most comprehensive artist archive which provides monographic material, and moreover documents the artistic interactions of the gallery artists.
In January 2011, after 15 years in Berlin Mitte, the gallery moved to Schöneberger Ufer 65 – an area in the direct neighbourhood of the historic Neue Nationalgalerie, which was the first centre of commercial art galleries in Berlin a hundred years ago. The new exhibition spaces are located in a classical residence from the 1890s, which has been redesigned by the Berlin based architect Arno Brandlhuber, while the interior design of the new offices has been realized by the Berlin based architect Christiane Schmitz.
